Photo Series-Lake Quannapowitt

Updated: Apr 5

Lake Quannapowitt is a great place for a walk. At a bit over 3 miles it offers some great exercise and is conveniently located nearby. Where the lake abuts the center of town and is surrounded by streets and houses on all sides, it's not typically considered a nature walk destination. We usually see Mallards, Canadian Geese and a pair of resident Swans, which are common in the area. Nothing too out of the ordinary but last year we had a close encounter a Blue Heron.

Yet, we did come across something unexpected. On our first walk this spring we ran into the above Bee's Nest. As we approach it, given its size, the first impression was a squirrels nest. The surprise is we walk by this area regularly and never noticed it before. The nest must have been well hidden in last summer's leaves. As I was taking pictures, a couple walkers as me what it was and if it was "alive" and I had no answer.

However, I started to question the same thing. Not seeing any bees around, I quickly searched on Google and discovered that bees in our area usually don't use a hive more than once. Considering that the hive survived the harsh winter in the Boston area this year, it seems to have potential from this photographer's viewpoint.
