A Closer Look
In life, sometimes its worth a closer look. Same with your photography. The left is the original shot with basic crop and color corrections. Its been on my website in the Boston section. Nice day, nice view and a cool looking bird. But, nothing to exciting. When recently adding new images from some Boston work, this one caught my eye. I'd like to say this was framed, shot and printed as shot. But, that's not the case and when thinking back it was shot was all about th

Sunday Morning
There is a resident Blue Heron on the Charles River in Natick, MA. I met a few people there who pointed it out, mentioning that this bird is one of two that frequent the area. Despite the beauty of Blue Herons, they seem to prefer locations that are less appealing, such as: Wetlands: Includes marshes, swamps, ponds, and lakes. Coastal: Estuaries with saltwater, tidal flats, and mangrove swamps. Rivers: Desert streams and slow-moving rivers. Urban/Open: They often hunt in floo

Bailed Out Again
Hard to believe the shots we can get on a Camera-phone. Its quite a step up compared to the gap between old Snapshot cameras and 35mm cameras. It was a hardware challenge back then. Some would say there is little or no difference today and an Camera-phone is all you need. What I think makes the difference between yesterday and today is the Camera-phone optics and image quality are far superior to an old Snapshot Camera. That, combined with the ability to use an HEIC image

A Quick Getaway
Sometimes you need to go with the flow. We had planned a weekend in Mid-May to take a break, and to shoot some new images. The Berkshires are relatively close to Boston but virtually unexplored from our perspective. Onward we went with the idea if we liked the area we would take a longer trip. A roadside stop at a scenic vista delivered an unexpected image, flowing wild flowers and all. What we found was the Berkshires had a feeling similar to southern Vermont. It makes

Travel Shots - The Person in Personality
In this example we used a different process to create the motion. Rather than move the camera we mount it on a tripod. The strategy is to slow down the camera shutter so the action is moving faster than the shutter.

Photo Series - Love at First Sight
Love at first sight. Love Birds. Chemical Attraction. Its like being at the disco, and meeting your match. All this happening while doing some photo work at Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester MA about using people in pictures to add personality to a photo for creating interest. Yet there is more personality in these shots, together or as stand alones, with Sea Gulls behaving much like people. These gulls seem to be checking each other out. A look, a closer look and they wal

Photo Series - Vilarinho San Ramao
Our trip was a group trip about spending time together and hiking the Douro River Valley in Portugal. Late one afternoon though, I did a break-out session while staying at Vilarinho Sao Ramao. The cool thing is everyone else was doing something, or nothing, to get ready for dinner. While taking some vineyard shots along comes this rainbow. Dark clouds, rainbow, breaks with the sun spotting the distant landscape; nature does its own thing. Photography has many fitting de

Photo Series – Gulf of Naples
One of our images has the “Statua di Augusto” (Augustus Caesar) looking out over the panoramic view of the Gulf of Naples and towards the island of Capri, one of his favorite spots. After his great uncle Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44BC, Augustus, along with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus, became the Second Triumvirate ruling Rome. The three were a military force controlling the entire Roman Empire. The First Triumvirate was an alliance that Caesar and Pompey the Grea

Blog: Finding the Extra-Ordinary
Fascinating word, extraordinary. We all know It as an adjective describing the exceptional, remarkable or a surprising. In the creative context, extraordinary takes the mundane and makes it artistic. Creative photography uses techniques such as blurs, colors, focuses, depth of field and motion to create an image built on reality. Many times the creative effort makes the base image almost unidentifiable. With today’s technology, techniques can be worked in the camera and/o

Photo Series - The "Shot Heard 'Round the World"
Recently I spent some time photographing Lexington Green in Lexington, Massachusetts. A kind of sleepy town, Lexington is known as a great place to live, consistently top-rated school systems and for its place in American history. My goal was capturing some of that unique spirit and its iconic landmarks. Lexington Green is the spot where they say the first shots of the American Revolutionary War were fired on April 19, 1775. It 's a significant link to America's history.

Photo Series-Lake Quannapowitt
Lake Quannapowitt is a great place for a walk. At a bit over 3 miles it offers some great exercise and is conveniently located nearby. Where the lake abuts the center of town and is surrounded by streets and houses on all sides, it's not typically considered a nature walk destination. We usually see Mallards, Canadian Geese and a pair of resident Swans, which are common in the area. Nothing too out of the ordinary but last year we had a close encounter a Blue Heron. Yet,

Photo Series - Blarney Castle
Welcome to our Photo Series previews. The concept is a select grouping of images representing a common themes that can fit with interior design themes or advertising and marketing campaigns. In most cases, groupings are from the same shoot. However, we do mix and match images to achieve a cohesive common theme or subject. This leeway allows us to create collections of travel landmarks, sunsets and sunrises, or athletic events, for instance; from different cities, countr

New Look and Better Experience
Hello Everyone One of our tasks this year was improving our website. The process has been on-going and we feel the site taken a few steps forward. One major change we shared earlier this year is the ability to show sizing, matting and framing to help visualize the finished product. Recent changes include: Site palette modified with new type, banner and page background colors for better image viewing Enabled zooming capabilities to help view the details in Portfolio Images Dr

Image Matting
Visualize our finished images with matting and framing. To some it makes a big difference in their selection process. If you are a fan of matting, as am I, it helps separate the image from the surroundings and establish a presence.

What we saw when taking this shot was a feeling of motion. To capture it a technique called panning or moving the camera with the motion was used. In this case the gull is the subject and panning with it creates motion and the resulting blur in the background.

This winter, we have been working locally in the Boston area. As much as we love travelling, its great to have photo opportunities nearby. We have had a few creative sessions photographing Boston's history and the 4 seasons of nature. Below are a few "local" sample sets we put together from recent photo-shoots. Using a mi

Why Travel Photography?
While the phrases origin is unknown “Every Picture Tells A Story” , first notable commercial usage was in Kidney Pill Ads in 1902. And in 1971, Rod Stewart's album of the same name crushed it with hits including Maggie May and Reason to Believe. With a goal of creating a tagline we looked inward to answer the question – Why do we do travel photography? After realizing it was a big question with a bigger answer, we drilled it down to the following 10 ideas: Become a Globa
