Bailed Out Again

Hard to believe the shots we can get on a Camera-phone. Its quite a step up compared to the gap between old Snapshot cameras and 35mm cameras. It was a hardware challenge back then. Some would say there is little or no difference today and an Camera-phone is all you need.

What I think makes the difference between yesterday and today is the Camera-phone optics and image quality are far superior to an old Snapshot Camera. That, combined with the ability to use an HEIC image in photo-editing software such as Lightroom gives the photographer the tools, techniques and tricks to make a good photo. To draw a parallel, RAW files are the equivalent of a negatives in a 35 mm while HEIC are a workflow similar to 110 film in a Instamatic. HEIC is basically a JPEG workflow.

Frankly, when I took this shot my thought was what a nice snapshot. Doing a quick scan and I liked the shot enough to process it in Lightroom. Using straightforward processing Lightroom allowed adding more color vibrancy and a feeling of dimension. If that's all you need, the HEIC is adequate. But for more advanced and complex processing RAW files will have much more data and offer greater potential. What else a camera offers is lenses and much more capability and creativity, as well as larger image reproductions.

The message is to view every potential shot as an opportunity and to take it regardless of having your camara or a cell phone. I prefer my Cannon but its not always in my back pocket.
