A Closer Look

In life, sometimes its worth a closer look. Same with your photography. The left is the original shot with basic crop and color corrections. Its been on my website in the Boston section. Nice day, nice view and a cool looking bird. But, nothing to exciting.

When recently adding new images from some Boston work, this one caught my eye. I'd like to say this was framed, shot and printed as shot. But, that's not the case and when thinking back it was shot was all about the scene. The bird, a Cormorant, spreading its wings on the perch was in and out of a series of shots rather quickly.

One of the beauties when shooting with a Canon Mirrorless, rather than a Camera-phone, is they capture uncompressed, unprocessed data with more detail, superior color depth and dynamic range. This allows the photographer to enlarge to a much bigger image and similarly when cropping its less degrading to the image quality.

This comparison shows it all. The crop, detail, color retouch and detail effects to create the photographic "pop" that separates the foreground from the background. That said, the Canon is a great camera but its not always with me. If this shot came along and all I had was a Camera-phone I would have taken the shot.
