Surfs up at Plum Island. Unexpected but part of a great nature stroll that includes the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. The area was established in 1942 as a bird sanctuary, and it occupies about 75% of it. For me, Plum Island is a relaxing, quick getaway with great photo opportunities whether it’s on the oceanside, salt marshes, dunes and freshwater marshes.
Today, Hurricane Erin had run its course up the east coast of the US and had begun moving out to sea. Erin was never a threat to Plum Island as a storm, but the far-reaching currents and surfs found their way. The shot is one of the many waves I caught. What I like about this one is the overall colors, the feel of motion, the ocean’s power and the spray.
Shot right at the water’s edge, the full frame camera was set at 200mm, f/20, 1/160 and ISO 100. The sun was so bright you could barely see the framing. It was a "point and click" day where you just aim the lens. Some minor Lightroom work helped balance the color and accentuate the feeling. Nature did the rest.
Find this and other images from the shoot in the Massachusetts Collection on my website. New work is being added all the time.
