Everyone's buzzing about street photography, but what is it really? What sets a street photo apart from just a random snapshot? The main thing with street photography is catching candid moments in public places. By capturing these spontaneous moments, photographers can turn a picture into a story. Is it just a nice shot, or does it tell a story, make you think, ask questions, or even reflect?
Street Photography is all about city life and is similar to photojournalism because it captures real, unscripted moments. But unlike journalism that focuses on events or actions, street photography is more artistic, using solid composition techniques. The rule of thirds is a common approach where you frame the subject, balancing it with the background to keep the scene clean and uncluttered. Leading lines, like roads or pathways, help guide the viewer's eye straight to the subject.
The photographer can get creative by using diagonals, patterns, and other elements to guide the viewer's eye. Cropping an image can help focus the composition and make the most of its elements. Personally, I enjoy shooting with the camera at an angle. A diagonal image is intriguing, and when it comes to street photography, which is all about action and character, that angles really add to the vibe.
Boston's awesome for street photography, but our Europe trip totally changed our perspective. We had a blast in Porto, Portugal, and in Italy's Rome, Naples, Salerno, and Benevento. Check out the link to see the Street Photography section in our portfolio!
