Although building codes can pose a challenge during the construction process, we acknowledge their importance as a regulatory tool that is essential for ensuring safety and quality in the project.

During the negotiation process of purchasing the house, the configuration of the Master Bathroom with the new stairway and walk-in dressing room was taken into account. The initial photo depicted the bathroom as it was when the house was bought. The modifications were necessary for the successful implementation of the new design, as discussed in a previous blog post. Ensuring compliance with building codes, such as the requirement for toilets to have 15 inches of lateral space on each side of the center, became crucial. Other factors considered included managing costs, demolition, closet space, and door swing.

Instead of constructing a thin glass wall to divide the toilet from the bathtub, the team innovatively decided to switch the bathtub with the vanity base. This modification successfully addressed all the issues. By positioning the linen closet to face outwards, a sturdy wall was formed on the left side of the entrance. This arrangement enabled the door to open towards the left, offering a pleasing sight of the vanity and sink upon entering the room.

It was a win-win outcome as code compliance meant repositioning the toilet, the tub, and the vanity. Luckily, both the vanity units and tubs utilize the same plumbing connections for water supply and drainage, which helped to minimize extra costs. Following the code helped us resolve the situation effectively. Stay tuned for our next series of photos.
