Although Vatican City is both a city and a country, it is located in Italy and typically part of a trip to Rome. The Vatican is the world's smallest independent city-state and sovereign nation. Like any country the Vatican has its own currency, stamps and post office. The Lateran Treaty of 1929 established the official boundaries of the Vatican. Its signers were Cardinal Pietro Gasparri for Pope Pius XI no other than Benito Mussolini who was the Prime Minister the Kingdom of Italy. Italy became a Republic on June 2, 1946, after a popular referendum that abolished the monarchy.
