Herculaneum. like Pompeii, was destroyed by Mt Vesuvius in 79AD. Located in Campagna, Herculaneum was a prosperous town that doubled as a resort for the Roman elite, and with its proximity to the Gulf of Naples, served as a trade center that helped to feed Rome and the empire. Our photos show its it art and history as well as its location relative to modern day Ercolano, 5 miles southeast of Naples, and Mt Vesuvius which towers over the area.
